Olympic Games Berlín 1936

They were the XI edition of the Summer Olympic Games in the Modern Era. They were held in Berlin, Germany, between August 1 and August 16, 1936.

The city of Berlin won the bid to host the Games in May of 1931 (over Barcelona City), more than one year before the appointment of Adolf Hitler as the Chancellor of Germany. Spain didn´t participate in the Games and, at the firt, the team of the United States had the intention of boycott the Games, but finally they opted for participating.

Hitler took advantage of the Games to shou the world the magnificence of the Nazism and entrusted an elaborate advertising progam to the minister of publicity Joseph Goebbels who at the the same time entrusted the upt in scene to Albert Speer and the supervision of filming to the photographer Leni Riefenstahl. In August 1, during the ignauguration of the Olympic Games of Berlin, like asample of the greatness, the Hindenmbug, flew over the Olympic Satdium moments before the apparition of Hitler.

Germany won the Games with 33 gold medals, 26 silver medals and 30 bronze medals.

The XVI Olympic Games were celebrated in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia, although the equestrian events could not be carried out in that country due to the rules of quarantine. Because of it, they were carried out in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the first occasion, and the unique one up to now, in which same Olympic games were celebrated in different countries. Melbourne was chosen like the host above rival as Buenos Aires (Argentina), Mexico City and six cities of the United States of America.

Australia obtained the third place with 13 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 14 bronze medals.

My prefered postcard

This is an used postcard from the Panathinaiko Stadium, Athens. It is the only major stadium in the world built fully of white marble.

It is a very interesting postcard because, the sender mention something about "...the olympics games next year...".

The problem here is that the postmark is dated FEB - 14 - 1909 so, according to my research, the sender was referring to the Intercalated Olympic Games that had been planned for 1910.

In 1901, the IOC decided that each four years, between two Olympic Games, some Games were carried in Athens. After the succes of the Olympic Games of 1896, Athens was enthusiastic in carrying out new a Game, but it was a lot of pressure and work to carry out thes games each four years.

When the Games of Paris 1900 and St. Louis 1904 were completely darkened by the World´s Fair, Athens appeared like a salvation for the Olymplic Movement, for which the second play in Athens was organized in 1906.

Nevertheless, Athens decided that was not capable of organizing other Games for 1910 (due the Balcan´s conflict) and already for 1914 there was much less support to produce them. Finally, the First World War put an end to this idea. But eighty years later, the idea revived when was decided that the Olympic Games of Winter were carried out.

Challenger

Fifth Anniversary of the Challenger Shutle Mission 1986

At about 11:30 AM, Eastern Time, January 28, 1986, the Shuttle Challenger was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Aboard the ship were its Commander, Francis R. Scobee, its pilot, Michael J. Smith, and its crew, Christa McAuliffe (the first 'Teacher in Space'), Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka, Judith A. Resnick and Ronald E. McNair, along with Payload Specialist Gregory B. Jarvis.

Seventy-three seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded and fell into the sea. On April 29, 1986 the identified remains that had been located were turned over to their families for burial. However, there were number of unidentified remains. These remains were buried at Arlington National Cemetery on May 20, 1986.
